Robbie Strauss is a composer-flutist based in Baltimore, MD, who’s work focuses on sharing his own experiences and the experiences of people around him. Robbie is passionate about locality in music and believes in the power of connecting local performers with local audiences.
Compositionally, Robbie’s work is lush, intimate, yet dramatic. He deals with personal experiences through music, often through themes of memory, existentialism, and humor. His recent works on the way down for Old Bay New Music and Gonefor The Rhythm Method String Quartet delve into personal stories, sharing those emotional journeys for the audience.
As a flutist, Robbie champions the work of living composers. He plays as a part of the Old Bay New Music Ensemble, and the Wallflower Winds, who’s concerts brought forth 14 new pieces over the last year. His recent solo repertoire consists of Composers based in the Baltimore area, as a part of the first concert of the Salon! New Music Series, which he curates.
Robbie graduated in 2025 from the University of Delaware for his Bachelor’s, majoring in Composition and Flute Performance. There he worked with Yoshiaki Onishi, Jennifer Barker, and Eileen Grycky. He now attends the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University for a master's in composition, studying with Felipe Lara.
